What is art? What makes one an artist? What makes something an artwork? Working as an artist, and researcher, I immersed myself in visual research, practicing my questioning and ambiguous tone of voice that resulted in a series of performalist self-portraits, the starting point for my graduation project. Key themes in this series were embodiment, gender politics, and performance. Through field research I discovered that women are underrepresented in mainstream art. I also discovered that artists create environments that allow room for play. This inspired me to create a platform that explores the political context of the female body and focuses on female subjectivity. I launched BODY ISSUE, an online magazine and website that features art, fashion and theory created by women.
